Stonework: Matching the Material to the project or Application

We have professionals in the stone masonry and brick masonry industry. We will help ensure the right stone is selected for your project or needs.

Before diving into the specifics of different stone for the projects you want done, it is smart to learn about some of the options we offer. Some of the top natural stone options we provide include:
  • Igneous: This is formed due to cooling of molten rock into a solid state. It is durable, strong, hard, and nonporous.
  • Granite: Made mainly of mica, feldspar, quartz and other types of colored minerals. The common colors in granite include green, buff, brown, pink, red, gray, and black.
  • Serpentine: The primary ingredient is serpentine and color ranges from greenish black to olive green. It is dense and fine grained.
  • Basalt: The colors range from black to gray and these are primarily used for retaining walls and paving stones.
  • Sedimentary: With this, sediments are deposited through the action of water or wind is consolidate in a rock.
  • Sandstone: This is a type of sedimentary rock that is made up of sand sized grains that are made from clay, iron oxide, and silica. Some of the colors include purple, copper, red, russet, buff, light brown, brown, and gray.
  • Shale: Made from silts and clays, shale is weak along the planes. It is high in limestone and the colors range from blue, yellow, red, and black.
For example, clay and porous stone are not smart options for higher traffic areas because they are more likely to absorb stains. Granite, quartzite, hard limestone, slate, and marble are commonly used for building solid steps, paving, saddles, risers, treads, and platforms.

Some of the factors we consider when choosing the right stone for the job include the surface finish, slip resistance, resistance to wear, maintenance needs, and resistance to staining. We have found that using soft clay and porous limestones will result in subpar outcomes that do not last. Harder stones, which we can recommend, will be much more resilient and stand up to wear and staining.

If your project is outside, our team recommends the use of granite, bluestone, or another type of igneous rocks. This is because they are more durable and can resist wear and weathering well. Our team will also consider the abrasion resistance of stone to ensure foot traffic will not negatively impact the surface. Some of the best finish options for outside use include natural cleft, sandblasting, flamed, or tooled.

If stone is being used for a terrace, plaza, or on your roof, open joint pavers are used. Granite pavers featuring non-slip finishes can also be used for these installations. You can contact our stone masonry company to learn more about these options.

For a load-bearing application, which includes arches, lintel, riser, base, ashlar, and rubble, our team recommends the use of high compressive strength stones that have a lower water absorption rate along with resistance to weathering and flexural strength. This is particularly important if the stones will be installed outdoors.

With non-load bearing installations, like curtain wall panels, wainscots, column covers, wall facing, veneer, and door jambs, the selection of the materials is usually guided by the physical characteristics and appearance.
When you call us, our team can provide you with information on stone masonry cost per square foot depending on the materials you choose and the scope of your project.
Stone Repair Services

Along with installation services, we also offer stone masonry repairs. In this industry, it is understood that when working with natural stone, damage and breakage may occur. Our team can repair any damaged stone; however, there are some limitations to know about.

Along with cracks, breakage can develop or may be discovered once the stone is installed. Our team can repair these issues. It is essential that you hire a professional stone mason for this as failure to try to handle the repairs alone may result in even more damage and issues.
What Issues Are Impossible to Repair?
If stone has a break, chip, or crack that compromises or affects the structural integrity or the structural anchorage of the unit to the backup, it cannot be repaired. Instead it must be replaced.
What is Repairable?

In some situations, natural stone may be repaired. Some of the methods that are used include:

  • Patching services for breaks less than ¾” in total depth.
  • Bonding which is used to adhere stone to stone.
  • Filling and patching is used for breaks that are more than ¾” in depth.
